The basic therapeutic premise underlying the Rolfing process is that, in the absence of significant pathology, when the various parts of the body are brought into alignment with one another then dysfunction and consequent pain will either disappear entirely or be greatly reduced. Developed by Dr Ida Rolf through half a century of study and practice Rolfing offers a way of restoring the natural alignment of the body. It involves the manual manipulation of the soft tissue (muscles, ligaments, fascia etc) using slow, precise, penetrating techniques which have the effect of re-hydrating the tissue and dissolving the adhesions that restrict movement and impede function. As well Rolfing employs techniques to change the underlying movement pattern which is the root cause of many musculo-skeletal problems. These techniques encourage the self-organizing, self-healing capacity of the body to re-pattern the nervous system and re-organize its structure. Movement becomes easier and more fluid. Pain disappears entirely or is greatly reduced. Rolfing Treats Patterns Not SymptomsThe Rolfing process is based on the individual needs of the client. Every person is different and every 'body' is different and the Rolfing ‘recipe’ can be adapted to take the uniqueness of each individual into account. Accordingly the 1st session begins with taking the clients history and with a thorough assessment of the clients structure. However while the Rolfing process is adapted to the needs of each individual Rolfing is not just concerned with addressing the symptoms that the client presents with. Rolfing treats patterns of strain and imbalance - not simply the symptoms these patterns produce. This is why the results of Rolfing treatment are generally more effective and longer lasting than the results of comparable physical therapy treatments. Long term patterns of movement cannot be changed in one or two ad hoc sessions aimed at addressing the symptoms these patterns have produced. Necessarily then Rolfing is a process - the ’layers of the onion’ have to be revealed methodically and logically whether this is done in four or five sessions or in the traditional ‘ten series’. Consequently each session is different, with its own territory and objectives and each session builds on the session that precedes it. Heal Your Body, Heal Your Life
Posture is actually the reflection of a pattern of movement and it is this pattern that needs to be changed if improvements in the physical functioning of the body are to be retained. As well the shifts and changes that occur during the twin processes of changing the bodies’ tissue and changing the underlying movement pattern can have a profound psychological impact on the recipient. For instance as the thorax opens to the breath and the front of the chest floats forward or as the ankles increase their range of motion and the gait becomes more fluid so the clients view of their body and themselves also changes. Changes in perception evolve into changes in attitude - confidence can grow and anxieties ease. Rolfing then operates at more than one level. It is very good at resolving myo-fascial problems that arise in the human body which is enough for many clients but it can also be a life-changing experience. The anecdotal evidence is that a significant proportion of ‘Rolfees’ substantially alter the direction of their lives. As

taller, straighter, feel more energized and experience a great feeling of well being. Anyone, whether or not
they intend to go through the full Rolfing process, is welcome to come and have a session and feel the

Rolfing is a system of manual and movement therapy that was developed by Dr Ida Rolf through more than 50 years of study and practice. Imagine the lifelong patterns that have been ingrained in your body during your lifetime either because of injury, occupation or sporting activity. Obviously major trauma to the body will have significant consequences in terms of pain and functionality but even apparently inconsequential habits create a great deal of tension and bracing resulting in misalignment, strain and pain. The Rolfing process is a unique system designed to restructure your body by re-aligning its constituent parts and by re-educating your nervous system. View Rolfing Therapy Options here. "I've done martial arts for almost twenty years and have suffered all kinds of
back, joint and muscular injuries. I've tried osteopaths, chiropractors and masseurs, none of them compare to a
good Rolfing session with Gary. He's fixed problems I've had for years which nobody else has been able to
rectify. If you've got serious muscular or joint problems give Gary a try. You won't regret it."

“I had my first Gua Sha treatment with Gary in about 1998. At that time I was
suffering from as many as two severe migraines a week which was destroying my life. Gua Sha did not completely
get rid of the migraines but it reduced their severity to a level where I could cope. Quite often the relief
was almost instantaneous. It also seems to have reduced their frequency and now I get about one migraine a
month. I’ve also had a tendon tear in my left shoulder successfully treated with Gua Sha and it helps me with
general neck pain. I’m a Gua Sha addict and still have a treatment along with some Rolfing about every six
weeks. As to the marks I’d rather have the ‘colour’ for a few days than the pain and it’s a great conversation
starter”
